Unions see opportunity amid chaos

"Labor's in a good place," Richard C. Iannuzzi, president of New York State United Teachers, boasts in today's New York Times. He predicts the "somewhat chaotic and combative" situation in Albany will spell victory for union-backed measures.

The unions want their pensions sweetened and their health benefits set in stone. They want local school districts to continue to increase their budgets without interference from the state, and they want to force some nonprofit groups to pay higher wages.
The Times says unions see Governor David Paterson as "a relatively weak governor," allowing them to continue to push their agenda through the Legislature.

Among those bills is one that would virtually freeze retiree health benefits in place. The New York Post again editorializes against it, accusing Civil Service Employees Association (CSEA) of "picking the lock on the state treasury."
