Making public information public

The Empire Center's new SeeThroughNY.net transparency site bogged down under the impact of more than 40,000 unique "hits" in less than 24 hours after it was released at noon on Thursday--and many of the initial searches came from state workers, according to our web statistics.

While the site's state payroll database has grabbed most headlines--especially in the state capital--the information available at SeeThroughNY also includes more than 1,400 teacher and superintendent contracts for nearly all 733 school districts in the state (including 35 BOCES districts). This is the first time New York taxpayers have been provided with easy access to these contracts, which provide a wealth of information on pay, perks and work rules.

Heavy traffic has slowed SeeThroughNY in the early going, but the situation is expected to improve by mid-day today.

Here
is the press release about SeeThroughNY.net, and here is a summary of rave reviews from good-government and fiscal accountability groups.
