Top 100 state earners

Ninety-two of the 100 highest compensated state employees in 2007 worked for the State University of New York, according to an analysis by the Gannett News Service.

Using payroll data that includes base salary and other compensation, Gannett found:

Statewide, the bulk of SUNY employees in the top echelon of well-compensated workers are physicians who teach and provide medical care at the university's hospitals in Brooklyn and Syracuse and on Long Island....

The top earner in 2005, 2006 and 2007 was Dr. Robert Lowery, a cardiothoracic surgeon at Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn. Lowery, who no longer works for the state, made $1.2 million last year and $1.3 million in each of the previous two years.

College presidents did not fare as well:

The best-paid SUNY president was John LaRosa of SUNY Downstate Medical Center ($368,714), followed by David Smith of SUNY Upstate Medical University at Syracuse ($358,899) and Lois DeFleur of Binghamton University ($311,350 -- 56th out of the top 100).
