4-day weeks ended for Park police

Citing increased overtime costs, the state Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is ending four-day weeks for 300 park police.

A main reason, says the Albany Times Union, "is the need to cut overtime for officers who make court appearances or attend training during their...day off."

Council 82, the union representing park police, objects to the change, saying the revised schedule should be negotiated with the union.

Meanwhile, another state agency, the Department of Environmental Conservation, citing the need to reduce employee commuting costs, is working with employee unions to a "compressed" work week of four days twice a month. (PPW link here.)

The federal government, which like the state offers many employees flexible work schedules, has rejected a four-day week. (PPW link here.)
