Westchester Medical Center salaries

As hospitals fight Governor David Paterson's proposed reductions, (here), the Journal News reports Michael Israel, the CEO of the quasi-public Westchester Medical Center is in line to earn as much as $1.2 million.

Based on documents obtained through the Freedom of Information Law (FOIL), the newspaper reports:

Israel, 55, made $920,000 in salary and $21,825 in benefits in 2007. His 2007 contract allows for him to make $1.2 million, including a lump sum of $300,000 if the hospital meets certain financial benchmarks.

Salaries and benefits for the 2007 hires totaled more than $4.6 million....

In 2007, the hospital paid $8.5 million in salaries and benefits to top officials.

Of the hospital's 30 vice presidents, 13 were hired in 2007. Israel told the newspaper that the hospital's salaries are similar to those paid at other hospitals.

Westchester Medical Center, previously owned by Westchester County, is a public benefit corporation (making it subject to FOIL). It receives about $15 million annually from county government for utilities and other services. It has an annual budget of $700 million and 4,000 employees.
