Civil Service results online

The state Department of Civil Service has begun posting results of competitive exams on its website.

Yes, despite a state hiring freeze, the exams continue, because eligibility lists are needed to fill anticipated vacancies in the future.

On the Eligible List Management System site, you can check exam results by list number, list name or job title. With a Civil Service ID, you can check all eligible lists for your own exam results.

The Times Union quotes Civil Service Commission President Nancy Groenwegen saying, "People who pass Civil Service examinations will encounter a much more user-friendly system for checking their rankings and scores on an eligible list."

Unlike the state worker salary sites that the Empire Center [www.SeeThroughNY.net] and newspapers such as the Times Union put up last summer, this site was welcomed by public employee unions, who call it a useful tool for job-seekers.

Public Employees Federation President Kenneth Brynien praised the department for increasing accessibility.

Considering the possibility of state layoffs in the near future, the site's launch "was a little bit ironic," Civil Service Employees Association spokesman Stephen Madarasz said.
