Teacher salaries go online

Although salaries of public school teachers and administrators are public information, citizens usually must file Freedom of Information Law requests to see them--a process that can take weeks or even months. Now that information is available with a click of a mouse.

A searchable database with the names and 2007-08 gross pay (including stipends) of 255,959 teachers and administrators has been posted on www.SeeThroughNY.net, the Empire Center's government transparency website.(For press release, see here. For news story, see here.)

Salaries of New York City educators were posted previously along with other City employees in January.

Labor costs--wages and benefits--account for about 70 percent of school district budgets in New York.

Residents in all but the state's largest cities will vote on proposed school budgets on Tuesday.

Launched July 31, 2008, SeeThroughNY's payroll databases include the salaries of more than 1 million public employees of the state government, school districts, the City of New York and 19 public authorities.

Also on the site are: contracts for teacher unions and school superintendents; legislative expenditures and pork barrel projects; and comparative financial benchmarks for local governments.
